Types of Tool Steel Used in Casting

Water-Hardening Tool Steel (W-Series): These steels are among the simplest alloy tool steels and can be hardened by quenching in water. They are often used in low-cost, general-purpose applications such as cutting tools, drills, and knives.
Cold Work Tool Steel (O, A, D-Series): Known for their excellent wear resistance, cold work tool steels are used for cutting, stamping, and forming tools. They are designed to maintain their hardness and resist wear even at lower temperatures, making them ideal for cold-working processes.
Hot Work Tool Steel (H-Series): These steels are designed for use in high-temperature environments. They maintain their hardness and toughness even when exposed to extreme heat during forging, die casting, and extrusion processes. Hot work tool steels are commonly used in the production of molds and dies that operate under high thermal stress.
High-Speed Steel (M, T, and S-Series): High-speed steels are engineered to withstand high temperatures and retain their hardness at elevated working speeds. They are typically used in cutting tools like drills, saw blades, and milling cutters, providing superior wear resistance and performance at high speeds.
Specialty Tool Steel (L-Series, F-Series): These steels are formulated for specific applications, such as low-temperature hardening or enhanced machinability. They offer tailored properties for precision casting in unique conditions, such as for aerospace and defense components.
Tool Steel Investment Casting Process
Melting
Tool steel investment casting begins with the melting of the raw materials. The process typically starts with scrap metal, which is melted down in an electric arc furnace. The furnace heats the metal to a high temperature, usually around 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit, until it becomes molten.
Once the metal is melted, the composition of the alloy can be adjusted by adding various elements, such as chromium, molybdenum, or vanadium. The exact composition of the alloy will depend on the specific application of the tool steel.
Casting
After the desired alloy composition is achieved, the molten metal is poured into a mold. The mold is typically made of sand, which is packed around a pattern that is the shape of the desired tool. The sand mold is then removed, leaving behind a negative impression of the tool.
The molten metal is then poured into the mold, filling the cavity. The metal is allowed to cool and solidify, forming the tool. Once the tool has cooled sufficiently, it can be removed from the mold and is ready for further processing.
Heat Treatment
The final step in the tool steel investment casting process is heat treatment. Heat treatment is a process of heating and cooling the tool to specific temperatures in order to achieve the desired properties.
The first step in heat treatment is annealing, which involves heating the tool to a high temperature and then allowing it to cool slowly. This process relieves any internal stresses in the tool and makes it easier to machine.
The next step is hardening, which involves heating the tool to a high temperature and then quenching it in a liquid, such as oil or water. This process hardens the tool and makes it more wear-resistant.
Finally, the tool is tempered, which involves heating it to a lower temperature and then allowing it to cool slowly. This process helps to increase the toughness of the tool and reduce its brittleness.
